Trash Flow Radio Recap - The Alex Chilton Tribute

On Trash Flow Radio Saturday afternoon, my backup co-host Grant Manship and I hosted our own Alex Chilton tribute/memorial/wake. We didn't play "September Gurls" or "Thirteen" or "In The Street," or anything recorded by The Replacements. (We are not NPR!). We did play a few other bands covering Alex Chilton, and a few old interviews with Alex Chilton, and also Congressman Steve Cohen's moving eulogy to Alex Chilton (delivered in the well of the US Capitol on Thursday, to an audience consisting of the US House of Representatives). But mostly what we played was nothin', nothin', nothin' but Alex Chilton's greatest rarities and obscurities, almost entirely of the 1971-1981 vintage.

Trash Flow Radio will air today from 3:00 to 5:00 EST on 88.3 FM.  At least 1 hour of today's show, if not the entire program, will be devoted to playing rare pre-1982 Alex Chilton records as a way to pay homage to Mr. Chilton following his untimely passing this week.

You can download last weeks show which was nothin', nothin', nothin' but music from Buffalo, NY released between 1977 to 1984 in celebration of the Pauline & The Perils and Vores reunions (and the Bernie Kugel and Terry Sullivan tributes) that took place in Buffalo last night.

Setlist for Yo La Tengo's 2010 WFMU All-Request Webcast

Ken Katkin comes through in the clutch for you all once again by compiling the setlist (available after the jump) for Yo La Tengo's annual all-request set on WFMU which took place this past Friday.  Here is the professor's take on this year's all-request set.

Yo La Tengo's annual WFMU All-Request Marathon show took place this year on the evening of Friday, March 5, 2010. Once again, I tried to keep score at home. Thanks to Jeff Tartakov for identifying "Blue Line Swinger" in the fifth set. (I am deeply embarrassed that I failed to identify that Yo La Tengo original myself). Thanks to Ira Kaplan for disclosing that the instrumental that kicked off the fourth set was "Caravan," and that in the second set "Indian Giver" was performed in medley with "Second Hand News." Ira also filled me in on some of the references in the closing medley that I didn't catch, though he thinks there were still more that he can't remember. Any help in further perfecting this list would be gratefully accepted.

Happy Birthday to Lou Reed

As Ken Katkin pointed out on the Trash Flow Radio Facebook page (become a fan if you're not already!!!), it's Lou Reed's birthday today! Why do I get the feeling that his birthday cakes are always covered in nothing but black icing. It's like when Nigel asked, "how much more black could this be and the answer is none. None more black."  Happy Birthday Mr. Reed.
